It's a tough world for hyena cubs • When we arrived at the spotted hyena den on Scotts Plain in the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, this little one was being bullied by its older and larger siblings. They were biting its ears and legs, and chasing it around the den. 60% of hyena cubs die from suffocation at birth, and those that do survive have to face hardships of their own. Female hyenas only have two teats, so litters of more than two have to fight to survive, leaving the weakest cubs to die of starvation. Mount Kenya's jagged peaks • According to recent updates from the @mountkenyatrust, wildfires have reignited in the moorlands of the Sirimon route. Continuing our hyena theme from yesterday, here are a few shots of the more elusive striped hyenas at sunrise in El Karama. Striped hyenas are far less sociable than their better known cousins, and typically forage alone or in pairs. They have a distinctive mane down the centre of their backs, which they can erect when threatened to make themselves appear 40% larger. How to say 'good morning' in hyena • Spotted hyenas often perform a 'greeting ceremony': standing side-by-side and head-to-tail, each sniffing the private bits of the other. Female spotted hyenas are unlike any other mammals in that their reproductive organs are literally far out. Because they have an enormously elongated clitoris, for centuries people assumed that they were hermaphroditic. No one still really fully understands the purpose of this bizarre genital apparatus, but one theory is that it helps clan members recognise each other, through this elaborate greeting ceremony.
